Angel Haze – Voice EP

We recently posted Angel Haze’s remix to Theraflu which definitely showcased her rapping ability; however, I was wondering what else she had in the bag. Voice EP is not at all what you would expect after hearing Theraflu, with some awesome indie flips and some familiar hip-hop balladesque beats Angel showcases her ability to actually rap about something, a trait too many emcees lack. She tells her story throughout the course of the album, her come-up, where she is at, and where she sees herself. The first few tracks on the album are straight piano and really give us a chance to hear her talk about some of the more personal subjects, her relationship with her mom, and not having a home. My favorite track on the EP has to be Smile, which is more of spoken word than rapping, absolutely moving as she goes in over a delicate piano.

There is no question that the girl has talent, but it will be interesting to see how she develops. I would definitely say the personal songs had my ear the most and that I did enjoy the first half of the EP more so than the second, but as she begins to find her lane I expect to hear products I can vibe with front to back over and over. She’s got the heart, the image, the swag, and the talent, and with a few more releases she will undoubtedly be a name you will be seeing on a regular basis.

Word on the street is that she has her debut album coming out in June and I am setting my standards high for that one. Voice will satisfy as an awesome introduction to Angel Haze but the album should be what tell us what she is all about.

The Boy Illinois – Inhale Pt.4 – Horai

by Robert Seabrook III

The Boy Illinois’ (or Illi for short) latest offering “Inhale Pt. 4: Horai” is a great listen. Seeing that he’s a midwestern artist , he may be under the radar out here in NYC. Know this: he shouldn’t be. I attended an event of his this year and was even more sold on him. He will have a listening party in NYC that I definitely feel is worth attending. He’s skilled and very composed on stage , which is rare from a young artist.

With that said , lets get to the music. The album is split into sections , a majority of which represent the different seasons , with the songs reflecting the emotions native to them. I personally think it’s a cool idea and actually works well for the subject matter on it. Illi touches on a variety of topics from the feelings tied to a blooming relationship (“Leap Yer”) government conspiracies (“All I’s On Me”) to just enjoying life for what it is (“Yer”).

It’s obvious a lot of love and care was put into this project. There’s very few missteps and all of the features fit perfectly. Illi is definitely an interesting combination of talent and confidence that I haven’t seen in a while. He has always had his own style ; he’s really honing it with this tape. There’s very little uniqueness in rap nowadays ; Illi is definitely an exception.

LiveLoveA$AP Mixtape Review

by Robert Seabrook III

The much anticipated (and just as much pushed back) debut tape from Harlem’s own ASAP Rocky. I personally have been listening for Rocky for some time, I’d say “Get High” made me pay attention ; its just a cool ass song. Purple Swag really popped for him too. So naturally…I waited patiently for a a full length tape from the guy , outside of the fan created “Deep Purple”.

Then Peso happened. And so did “Wassup” and waiting patiently turned into “where the hell is this tape”. His manager (@LiveLoveASAP) and I follow each other. This is probably due to me arguing in Rocky’s favor on other sites and on Twitter. You see, with the time it took for this tape to drop , all sorts of backlash appeared for the Harlem rapper. “He’s from Harlem why doesn’t he sound like a NY rapper” “Why is he always paying homage to Houston” “He stealing swag” whatever….whatever. I’m not getting into all of that ; mainly because I feel it’s all stupid. So now that the tape is out…lets discuss the music.

This is some of the flyest audio shit I’ve heard all year. Is Rocky somewhat limited with his rapping ability at the moment? Sure. But his ear for beats/understanding of hooks and flowing on beat isn’t something that can be taught. The more music he makes (and he’s churning it out at a consistent rate now) , the better he will get at it. Every rapper doesn’t need to be a rappity rap 80 bars of shit we don’t care about rapper. There’s room for that…and room for what Rocky makes…as he dubs it..TrillWave.

LiveLoveASAP as a whole flows together very well for a mixtape. There’s a sound that permeates it that I honestly havent heard before; definitely not from someone who dwells in the same city as me. He has some songs on here that just cannot be denied. Brand New Guy(Schoolboy Q went to work)? Get Lit? Demons?? Not to mention the songs that have already been out. The tape isnt flawless; it does lull in spots and Rocky could use more words to express himself. But is it good?? Yes it is. If you’re a fan of Rocky or even if you just think Peso goes (as should everyone with ears) you will enjoy this. There’s also songs on here that will definitely allow Rocky to work crowds into a frenzy at the Club Paradise Tour next year.

Sidenote: Clams Casino lost his mind on this. Completely.
